2024 was the biggest year yet for the Developing Dev. Here are some stats to show you how far we’ve come this year:
More than doubled the # of subscribers: 41,000 → 94,000 (almost at 100k!)
Tripled page views: ~1M/yr → ~3M/yr
Launched a podcast that went better than I expected (YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts)
Wrote a post every week without fail: 51 this year, 97 in total (almost at 100 posts!)
I’m most proud of that last one. I’ve stayed up late most Thursday nights getting my weekly post done since I work full-time and have many other commitments. I’ve never missed even when on vacation (I’m writing this article at ~3 am from Cancun).
Even though I haven’t made a dime off of writing this newsletter, I write it because I get to learn from others, explore interesting topics, and solidify what I’ve learned. And the main reason why I never miss is because I promised I’d write weekly when I started. I might change that at some point though and could use your input:
If you want to see my top posts by view count, you can find them here. Looking forward, here’s some stuff I’m planning for next year:
More podcasts - I’m just getting started here. You have no idea how good top engineer career stories can be. When I first joined Meta, I discovered a series of posts from Meta’s top engineers detailing their career paths. I loved those stories and want to share something similar with you all.
Dabbling in video - I’d like to make some videos since it’d be fun to learn and try to make something quality. Today, most of my content is educational, but I am considering making some entertaining videos too.
Launching my passion project - I plan to launch the product I’m building in 2025. I’ve been drowning in work and content so I haven’t had much time to share about ongoing product development. We’re making a lot of progress here even though I haven’t shared much yet.
Branding refresh - So far, I’ve just picked a font and color I liked without much thought. It’s hacky though so I’m thinking about doing a brand refresh to have some consistency.
I appreciate all your support this year; writing this newsletter wouldn’t be the same without you! 🙏
After writing almost a hundred posts, here’s the best way to find relevant articles organized by what the content will help you with (🎖️ = my recommendation) :
0. I want to become better at writing
1. I want to improve my soft skills
2. I want to learn how promotions work
3. I want to grow into a mid-level engineer
4. I want to grow into a senior engineer
5. I want to grow into a staff engineer
6. I want to grow to staff+ engineering levels
7. I want help with finding a job/interviewing
8. I want to learn from other engineer’s experience
From Microsoft Intern to Meta Staff Engineer: Raviraj Achar 🎖️
From Liberal Arts Major to Amazon Principal Engineer: Steve Huynh
9. I want to hone my engineering skills
All my writing fits into the above index except this post on my WFH desk setup.
If you have any questions you’d like me to address in 2025, feel free to drop them here. I will use these to make sure I answer the questions you care about most.
