The summary at the end really helped crystalize the behaviors I can strive to emulate. Zach's note on positivity really resonated - I do my best and most fulfilling work when I feel positively towards my job. It also reduces my risk of burnout and allows me to bring more energy into my job. So I would love to hear a podcast on how people find positivity towards their work - especially in fields they may not necessarily feel they have an innate passion for.
Agreed, I liked his note at the end too. Inspiring and interesting to hear his reflections on his career looking back. Thank you for listening Ben!
I plan to have more guests on in the future and can ask where they get their motivation from when they don't have an innate passion for what they're doing
[...] I’d love your honest thoughts on what could make the podcast more helpful and enjoyable.[...]
Do not fall in the hype existing nowadays about: everyone in my podcast is super successful. That's not real life. I would propose bring real life stories, even those that are not straight successful.
It could work if the stories are interesting, although the tough part is its difficult to find interesting stories from cases that are ordinary. Thanks for listening Marcos!
Ryan! This was an incredible first attempt at podcasting, far surpassing my own efforts. :)
Here are my 2¢:
- The background lighting was well-lit and not distracting, which I really appreciated!
- The content remained consistent throughout the podcast. You kept the conversation focused on Zach’s career trajectory and avoided unnecessary tangents. It was amazing!
- You ended the podcast by asking Zach about his potential changes if he were an L3 again. This is a valuable question for people like me who are starting their careers, so thank you for including it!
- It would have been great to see the microphones mounted on a table instead of you both holding them. Why? Because it would have made me, the listener, feel like I’m sitting around a table with three friends having a really interesting conversation. Of course, I understand that space was limited.
- While I understand that the episode was an interview, I suggest transitioning the format to a more conversational style in a one-on-one setting. From watching and studying many podcasts, I’ve noticed that a 1:1 style conversation can greatly engage the audience and provide an opportunity for both speakers to learn from each other rather than just the interviewee.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the episode and am eagerly looking forward to the next one. :)
I would love to here what Zach did for his interview preparation for Netflix and Airbnb. Zach are you able to share that? I'm interested in interviewing at L6 level myself. What kind of interview tools/preparation did you do?
This was an amazingly helpful story to listen too! Great to be able to listen to this and almost get a mentor like discussion for free. I think this episode was spot on. Maybe some improved production quality could go a long way. But more perspectives like this would be awesome!
I can’t seem to find it on Podcasts (apple’s podcast platform)
Interesting, I can't seem to find it either. There is an Apple Podcasts direct link here under "Listen On": https://www.developing.dev/p/staff-at-airbnb-by-age-26-zach-wilson
That should work for now while I figure out how to get the show indexed in their catalog
Thank you, very informative 👍👍

In a modest way, I'm trying to do that with my podcast

Thanks for the feedback Yesh!
> It would have been great to see the microphones mounted on a table instead of you both holding them
I'm going to experiment with remote recording on the next one so that'll change the A/V set up a bit
> 1:1 style conversation can greatly engage the audience
Yea I'm going to try and make it a little more smooth as I go. Want to get out of the formulaic approach of just asking questions
Thanks for sharing this podcast.. I really enjoyed every minute of it!
Happy to hear that Joseph, thanks for listening!

Good question I'm curious too, I'll ask him and see if he's willing to share

Glad to hear that Chad, I'll work on the production quality for the next episode :)
