Staff at Airbnb by Age 26 | Zach Wilson

Zach shares the behind the scenes of his job hopping and tips on how to build an internal brand each time

Happy Friday everyone; today’s post is different from usual. I’m not revealing the passion project I visited China for yet, but I plan to start sharing occasional podcast episodes. I’ll record conversations that I feel would be interesting or helpful for you.

My first podcast episode is with Zach Wilson, who had a crazy career trajectory. He got to Staff at Airbnb in 3 years through job hopping. Here are the parts of the interview I think you’ll find interesting:

  • Junior (IC3) -> IC4 in one half - he talks about how he succeeded early at Meta

  • Senior (IC5) promo blocked at Meta - how behaviors can block promos even if you have high ratings

  • Interviewing into IC5 at Netflix - your network & internal brand make a big difference

  • Burning out on Staff (IC6) scope at Netflix - concrete example of why behaviors block promos

  • Interviewing into IC6 at Airbnb - getting multiple offers and negotiating on level

  • How to build credibility fast - His method for building his internal brand from scratch at each company

  • Reflecting on regrets and what he would have changed

It should be available everywhere you listen to podcasts (might take a second for the RSS to sync). If all else fails, here’s the YouTube link.

Why I’m Getting Into Podcasting

I started writing in 2023 because I wanted to become a better writer. I knew that writing was a critical skill for scaling myself, so it was a no-brainer. The consistency paid off, and now I feel more confident in my writing. There is a noticeable difference between my first posts (ex1, ex2) and my recent ones.

Speaking is another important skill for influence, which is especially useful at the higher levels. That’s why I’ve gone to Toastmasters occasionally, which has been helpful, but I’m still so far from great. I’m going to start recording podcasts to get better at communicating succinctly.

I held off on doing this for a long time because I wasn’t interested in learning how to make videos. You can probably tell by the hacky video setup in this episode. We’re literally crammed into the corner of my tiny room in SF, using just our iPhones to record. The wall behind Zach couldn’t be any more messy.

What I Want the Podcast To Be

1) I want the conversations to be transparent. There is a lot of privileged information that is shared in 1:1s. I feel lucky to have had access to that kind of information and want more of it out in the open for public benefit.

2) I want to cut out as much fluff as possible. This is similar to what I try to do with my writing. I want to reduce the friction for these ideas to be useful. I’ll cut out all unnecessary words and sounds. I’m also starting with no opening jingle since I don’t like waiting for that when I listen to podcasts. Also, no ads for now since I don’t think it’s worth the effort and listening tax.

What I’d Appreciate From You

I’d love your honest thoughts on what could make the podcast more helpful and enjoyable. I’m open to feedback on anything as usual (e.g. my speaking, the questions, the A/V quality, editing, video setup).

I hope this episode serves as a good “before” picture so I can look back on it and see how much I’ve improved.

I’ll also start testing the waters by posting vertical videos on IG Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts to promote the podcast. This is similar to how I promote this newsletter on my socials. If you want to follow along on the journey you can find me at:
