How do you balance the fact that by working longer hours than you are being asked to, you are essentially lowering the value of your labor? And also how do you think about the opportunity cost of working for your job instead of working for your own self when you have the spare time?

That is a fair point. I am fortunate that I am paid more than I need so I don't worry too much about the $ per hour worked.

Big tech does a good job paying a lot more for each promotion. For most big tech engineers, focusing on promotion is the most lucrative thing they can do. This changes though if promotion isn't in sight or you have a side hustle making serious money.
Thanks Ryan! I hadn’t thought about the impact of promotion in big tech. I wasn’t sure how much the extra work would be positioning you towards a promotion, but that makes sense as a big potential upside.

"Late nights take time to recover from", I need to engrave this in my head😩
I feel that it's tough. Late night can be the most productive time since no one is pinging for anything then
